Kumanoto prefecture, located in southern part of Japan, is famous for producing Shibu-uchiwa (branch fans) for more than 400 years. Artisans carefully handmade the fans and coat with persimmon tannin and fixed to a bamboo handle. The Tannin makes its Japanese traditional paper (washi) strong and long-lasting, which also deterring insects. The colour will shift and deepen to a beautiful rich hue as its ages.
